Blend modes

Plain

Normal
Draws over what is below, with no interaction between them.

Darken

Darken
Keeps whichever is darker, this layer or what is below.
Multiply
Always darkens, and white does nothing. The usual choice for shadows and stains.
Color burn
Darkens hard and lifts contrast and saturation, crushing toward black.

Lighten

Lighten
Keeps whichever is lighter, this layer or what is below.
Screen
Always lightens, and black does nothing. The usual choice for glows and mist.
Color dodge
Lightens hard and lifts contrast, blowing out toward white. Hot highlights.
Addition
Adds the two together and stops at white. Flat, predictable light.

Contrast

Overlay
Darkens the dark parts and lightens the light ones. The contrast follows what is below.
Soft light
A gentle lighten or darken toward this layer's color. Never clips.
Hard light
Overlay with the roles swapped: the contrast follows this layer. Harsh.

Difference and arithmetic

Difference
How far apart the two colors are. Identical pixels go black, which makes this the one for spotting changes.
Exclusion
Like Difference but softer. Mid greys stay grey instead of going black.
Subtract
Takes this layer away from what is below and stops at black.
Divide
Brightens what is below by however dark this layer is. Blows out fast.

Color

Hue
Recolors what is below without touching its shading or how vivid it is.
Saturation
Makes what is below more or less vivid, keeping its color and shading.
Color
Takes this layer's color over the shading below. The one for tinting greyscale art.
Luminosity
Reshades what is below without changing its color. The opposite of Color.
